Pay4MyMovie
- THE STORY
Ok,
many of you have heard of SaveKaryn.com - a website soliciting donations
to save a NYC girl from credit card debt. Karyn went overboard shopping
and asked people to send her a buck or two to help pay down her bills,
while additionally selling her designer duds on ebay. She raised over
$13,000 in donations alone. How nice it was of people to give her money
because they could relate to being in debt themselves! Well,
I got to thinking that here I am making a movie, actually trying to
further my career and not just shop-aholicing, and I sure could use
some financial help myself. So, pay4mymovie.com was born.
As
industry folks know, movies cost a lot of money and are, at best, a
bit like playing the stock market. But filmmaking is also an art form
- a very public art form - and likely the most expensive medium in which
to work. (Curious? See below for a partial list
of expenses in making just a 10 minute film.) Indie filmmakers struggle
like all artists, scraping by on odd jobs, facing piles of rejection
letters from festivals and funders, and living with self-doubt. But
then there is that ray of hope: someone says they like your work, your
film is invited to a festival or someone offers to help pay for your
movie!
So,
now that you've listened to my spiel, help me pay4mymovie! There
are 3 ways to help:
- Make
a donation
- Check
out my online auctions
- Give
Susan a job

The
easiest way to help me pay4mymovie to donate through PayPal.
You will need to sign-up if you don't already have an account
- it is pretty painless and good for auctions and purchasing things
online. Or, if you prefer to send a check or money order, please
email me directly for
an address.

Employment:
Yes,
my lovely readers, give Susan a job! Web site design/construction,
photography, PowerPoints or freelance production, I don't care.
I know all the relevant software, have 7 years experience covering
development, contracts, scheduling, on-set positions, producing
and post, and am a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed worker! Email
me for a resume or check out seebunny.com,
my main site.

The
cost of a 10 minute 35mm film
OK,
I am not a student, thus I did not have access to free equipment
and reduced student rates. (Students: take advantage of your position
while you can! Even if you're not a film major you still qualify
for substantial student discounts with your ID.) I originally
thought I might be able to make my film for $10,000. Ha! Yes,
I am sure some very creative, well-connected people can do it
(more power to ya) but this is what it has cost me (and even I
was able to get some discounts):
|
Equipment
rental |
$4,775 |
| Film
stock (short ends, 5279 & 5277) |
$3,330 |
| Food
for crew |
$700 |
| Film
to video transfer for editing |
$3,000 |
| Re-recording
mix |
$980 |
| Travel
for post-production work |
$975 |
| Negative
cutting, titles, opticals & lab work for a 35mm print |
$3,550 |
| Festival
entry fees - 26 entries as of 2/21/03 |
$783 |
| Distribution
costs - dubs, cases, press kits, etc. |
$310 |
| Shipping
everything everywhere |
$400 |
|
Total:
|
$18,803 |
| And
this is just the beginning. I've left out people costs for
political reasons as well as personal expenses, i.e. I didn't
have a job while working on the film. May make the aspiring
filmmaker think twice about his 35mm dream project! |
